Scott's Pick of the Month - October 07

Beginner Scout -

I do not care what anyone says, these lakes are beautiful in so many ways. Where am I talking about, why the Bertha May Lake chain!

Starting at the trail head, you pass the muddy yet peaceful Potholes Lake, which over time is becoming a wetland again. Hike a switch back, but not ridiculously so, trail to Bertha May Lake. Total distance 1.2 miles. The lake has 10 established campsites around its perimeter. The water is crystal clear, and the Brown Trout love to take bait for a fresh fish fry! If your troop is lucky you might be able to snag the spot that when you look over the ridge you get a face full of Mt. Rainier.

For a nice day hike head over to Granite Lake. Another pristine lake waiting for a polar bear swim, brrr...

Experienced Scout -

Surprise Lake - Conrad Basin

This 17 mile round trip is for the experienced hikers only. I give it a high rating of difficulty only as you have some serious elevation gain at times. But, take into consideration what you get to see? Beautiful alpine meadows, rocky moraines and mountain peaks, all just a few of the perks in this must do roundtrip! And, very few people utilize this wonderful trail, LONER BONUS!

Your scouts will thank you, and be looking for the next foray into the wild!
